The Barnum Effect

Ancient Wisdom

Written by Lee Avery

So many so called spiritual therapies rely on the wisdom of the ancients as a justification of their effectiveness, as if ancient societies such as the Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans etc. knew more about psychology, physiology and medicine than we do today.ancient-healing

Just like the ‘All Natural’ phallacy, the idea that we have somehow forgotten or misplaced some mystical lore, or that some secret society has hidden away some powerful force that only the select can know is naive at best.

Most ancient societies thought that illness was brought on by evil spirits (rather than pathogens) and would treat them as such. Headaches would be resolved by drilling a hole in the head, dead rats could remove plague, and rubbing urine into a injury could heal it (yes, these are all real ancient wisdom cures).

To believe that ancient cures should be used today shows an ignorance of how the world works
